Jon Is An IT Genius

October 31, 2009 :: Posted by - Mr. Review :: Category - Celebrity

Jon Gosselin, partaking in illegal drugs while his children are in the vicinity?

We know; we’re shocked too. But according to Gosselin’s former nanny and rumored ex-fling Stephanie Santoro, it is true.

Santoro recently spilled all sorts of dirt on Jon to Inside Edition, including the allegation that the Jon & Kate Plus 8 dad liked to toke up at the house while his expansive brood innocently slumbered, unaware that their father was indulging in the demon reefer.

Says Santoro,

“He said they were in bed and that he was out back smoking when we got there…It was just Jon there that night with the kids…[Jon said], ‘That wore off quick—but it was just seeds…My good stuff is in New York.’”

The former kid-watcher also reasserted her earlier claim that Jon had electronically snooped through Kate’s personal records, including e-mails and texts:

“He worked at security in IT. He knows how to do it. He bragged about knowing how to do it.”

Hmm; perhaps that’s how he also managed to wipe out the couple’s joint bank account undetected?

Kate Gosselin Happily Single

October 31, 2009 :: Posted by - Mr. Review :: Category - Celebrity

Unlike her ex-husband Jon “I Never Met a Vagina I Didn’t Like Including Lopsided Ones” Gosselin, Kate is swearing off dating according to her recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Via Celebuzz:

“I’m not thinking about [dating] but the thought has crossed my mind at some point [that] it’s going to be scrutinized. Let’s not talk about it.”
Kate did, elaborate, however, that she wouldn’t want to subject any new suitors to the glare of the spotlight and “the 18 cars [of paparazzi] that follow me around.”

Listen to Miss Hollywood here complete with Starbucks grip: “Oh, I don’t want to frighten the poor man with my glamorous lifestyle.” Notice how her answer isn’t: “I’m not sure how my kids would respond to it.” I mean, it’s not like she wouldn’t be concerned about that because if they’re all out of whack and not filming, who’s going to foot the Lexus lease? And cue the panic attack.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto

October 31, 2009 :: Posted by - Mr. Review :: Category - SPORTS

manny-pacquiao-vs-miguel-cotto2

The Pacquiao vs. Cotto mega-fight is just over two weeks away. The big night of course is Saturday, November 14, when both men will step into the ring in Las Vegas. The match has been eagerly anticipated for months and it has big implications for not just the welterweight division, but for the pound for pound rankings and the future competition for one Floyd Mayweather as well.

Leading up to the big Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto match fans have generally been lumped into just a few main groups. Here’s a look at how some fans are feeling about Pacquiao vs. Cotto as the fight approaches.

The Pro-Pacquiao Fans

Manny Pacquiao has a diehard group of fans, not just from his home country of the Philippines, but from around the rest of the world as well. Generally speaking, these fans would support Pacquiao and pick him to win regardless of the match-up. This fight against Miguel Cotto is no different, and people in this camp are eagerly awaiting a dominating Pacquiao performance.

The Pro-Cotto Fans

Miguel Cotto has his own diehard following of course, most of which come from the island of Puerto Rico. What do they think about their hero’s chances against the pound for pound king? His size advantage, experience against bigger men and all-around skill set will win him the day without too much of a problem.

The “Pacquiao is Overrated” Camp

People in this group point to a few key pieces of evidence for their stance on Cotto and Pacquiao. The first is that Oscar De La Hoya was past his prime and weight drained. The second is that Ricky Hatton was past his prime and was recently planted into the canvas by Floyd Mayweather. This group of fans feels that all of the Pacquiao – Cotto hype has forgotten these facts, and is anticipating a rude awakening come November 14th.

However, should Pacquiao win they are ready to discredit with their third piece of evidence , that Pacquiao has forced Cotto to weigh in at a catch weight instead of the welterweight limit. (See also: “Fans of Floyd Mayweather” camp)

The “Cotto is Shot” Camp

We all saw how Antonio Margarito brutalized Miguel Cotto, and this group of fans feels strongly that there is no returning from that kind of beating. The subsequent shaky victory over Josh Clottey has done little to change their minds, and memories of Cotto’s scares at junior welterweight are all too prominent as well.

The Realists

Then we have a fifth and final group of fans, the realists. They can see everything from both sides, and ultimately want the best man to win so that the biggest fights can be made afterward. They recognize that Cotto has suffered a brutal loss, and has been less than his best since then. They also recognize that Pacquiao’s weight class jumping and contract stipulations raise some question marks.

Ultimately though, they want a good fight that brings positive attention to the sport of boxing. These fans want the winner of this match to be promptly put into the ring with Floyd Mayweather in what would easily be the biggest fight of the generation. These fans may be rooting for one fighter over the other, but they’ll be happy with any result that brings other fans out of their seats and sets up more exciting moments in the future.

This Is It Hits DVD In 2010

October 31, 2009 :: Posted by - Mr. Review :: Category - Music News

Michael Jackson’s This Is It grossed $20.1 million worldwide in its first official day in theaters, raking in $7.4 million in domestic box office and a remarkable $12.7 million overseas. This Is It’s haul comes up short when compared Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which grossed $8.6 million its first day in theaters on its way to the current highest-grossing debut week for a concert film, Variety reports. However, Hannah debuted on a Friday, while This Is It’s official premiere came on an October Wednesday during the World Series, so by early estimates Jackson should be King of the box office this weekend.

It was previously reported that a This Is It DVD would be released prior to Christmas, but due to a regulation that usually forces studios to wait a minimum 90 days before releasing a new film to DVD, This Is It has been pushed to a late January or early February DVD release, the Los Angeles Times reports. Because the film will only have a two-week theatrical run, Sony executives argued that a This Is It DVD should circumvent the agreement between theater owners and movie studios, but the theater chains relented. According to the LAT, This Is It will be shown on 6,000 screens in 3,481 theaters these next two weeks, so Sony opted to push the DVD release date to 2010, but will miss out on the Christmas profits.

In one last piece of This Is It news, the AP reports that Sony will submit the documentary for Academy Award consideration in categories ranging from film editing and sound to Best Picture and Best Director. Unfortunately, the most noteworthy category in which This Is It had the best chances of competing, the Best Documentary Oscar, already passed its deadline, making Jackson’s rehearsal footage film ineligible. The Elizabeth Taylor-approved film will also be ineligible for the Golden Globes, which doesn’t recognize documentaries. Because this year’s Oscars will feature an expanded Best Picture field of 10 nominees, based on its rave reviews it’s plausible that This Is It might score a nod for the King of Pop.

Kholomar Under The Microscope

October 31, 2009 :: Posted by - Mr. Review :: Category - Celebrity

The Los Angeles Lakers are starting a new season and the $33 million man everyone has their eye on is Lamar Odom. Of course basketball fans apparently care about what Lamar actually does on the court, but the rest of America is paying much more attention to his personal life with new bride Khloe Kardashian.

In fact, the kick-off of the Lakers season this week has already been overshadowed by Khloe and Lamar’s trip to the tattoo parlor (K and L tats…too sweet). Here at PopEater we are wondering will marrying Khloe be a boom or a bust for Lamar? Our experts weigh in after the jump.

“When any of these poison Kardashians get their hands on a professional athlete, it usually results in a higher profile for the player, but a decrease in both playing time and physical ability. Look up Bush, Reggie,” says Deadspin.com editor AJ Daulerio. “Odom just signed a fat contract in August so maybe he feels more secure about the decision than Mr. Bush did. I’d just worry that Mr. Odom exposes himself to possible injury since Khloe is larger and more intimidating than many of his NBA opponents. I wouldn’t be shocked if he spends a good portion of the season on the disabled list.”

As Daulerio mentions, Lamar isn’t the first professional athlete to be caught in the wily web of the Kardashian family. Kim Kardashian is very much back on with her NFL running back boyfriend Reggie Bush after the pair took a brief summer hiatus. This time around Kim has made sure to make herself a staple at all of Bush’s games. And while Reggie was flailing last season when the pair first hooked up maybe canoodling with Kim this time around has given his on-field mojo a boost (see, A-Rod and Hudson, Kate) because he has been a major part of the Saints 6-0 record this season.

Reggie Bush was also a relative newbie to the whole celebrity thing. Being a Laker, Odom was a celebrity in his own right before he got together with Khloe. Plus he is backed by a solid team that probably won’t let him fail.

“Big free-agent contracts are much harder to live up to for role players who move to new cities and are expected to be stars. That’s not the case with Odom, especially with Ron Artest coming in to join Kobe Bryant & Co. They might have the best defensive team in the NBA,” says New York Daily News sports writer Jesse Spector.

Spector is actually more concerned with Odom’s influence on poor Khloe. Before marrying the Kardashian, Odom was probably best known for his obsession with candy. He is so obsessed he has admitted that he eats candy for breakfast.

“Now, Khloe Kardashian is a lovely woman, but in Hollywood, where everyone is expected to be a waif, she gets called fat — even after she’s lost a significant amount of weight. For a lot of people who have lost weight, one of the easiest ways to keep it off is to change your grocery-shopping habits and not have junk food in the house. So, what happens there?” Spector wonders.

Don’t worry Jess, we’re sure the cameras will be rolling the entire time. So tune in and wait and see.

Favorite Scary Movies Part 3

October 30, 2009 :: Posted by - Mr. Review :: Category - Movie News

Nightmare on Elm Street

Based on a strange character director Wes Craven saw out his window as a boy, Elm Street may be one of the greatest premises for a horror franchise. After all, what is scarier than being attacked in your sleep when you are at your most vulnerable?

The film also gave birth to one of the most popular ’80s icons, Freddy Krueger. He would evolve into more of a jokester murderer in future films, but the mysterious psychopath with the trademark red and green sweater, burned face and razor glove is scariest in the first. Sure, the film has worn a bit with age and it’s got some cheesy moments, but it still makes good in the jump-scare department, especially when Freddy’s glove makes an appearance in Nancy’s bath. Or when Freddy makes a literal impression from the other side of Nancy’s bedroom wall. Tina’s death is one of the best slasher death sequences ever, as is the bloody geyser of Johnny Depp toward the climax of the film.

The jury is still out on how the remake will fare, but we hope it can stand its own with this modern horror classic.

Evil Dead 2

It’s rare that any movie sequel manages to surpass the original. It’s even more rare in a genre as formulaic and predictable as horror movies. That said, there was nothing predictable about the first Evil Dead. With more experience under his belt and a bigger budget to draw upon, Sam Raimi was able to surpass his freshman effort and turn out a horror film that was as creepy as it was kooky.

Evil Dead 2 is argued by some to be a remake of the original rather than a sequel because of the differences in the opening recap of the first Evil Dead. But as long as Raimi insists Evil Dead 2 is a true sequel, who are we to argue?

The film continues the adventures of everyone’s favorite big-chinned, wise-mouthed hero, Ash Williams. Ash returns to the cursed cabin in the woods to battle the Deadites and rid the world of the evil book Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.

Evil Dead 2 is a strange mix of humor, campy adventure, grotesque violence, and good, old-fashioned frights. The first Evil Dead was barely more than a prototype for the Evil Dead formula Raimi established in this sequel. And with the following sequel Army of Darkness ditching most of the horror in favor of more camp, it could certainly be argued that the franchise peaked at number two. In any case, we’re hoping the long-promised Evil Dead 4 will see the light of day.

The Ring

The horror genre had almost totally stagnated by the time the ’90s rolled around. Pseudo-parody films like Scream helped turn things around, but it was the Japanese film industry that reminded viewers horror could still be scary. In 2002, Japanese horror movie Ringu was remade for American audiences as The Ring.

Like many of the films on this list, The Ring bucked the trend by refusing to allow gore and exploitation to rule the day. The Ring was more interested in terrifying viewers through evocative imagery and a slowly building sense of tension. Who wouldn’t freak out by the thought of a simple videotape foretelling certain doom within one week?

It helped that The Ring enjoyed a healthy budget and some bankable Hollywood talent in place of the dime-a-dozen horror victims of most movies. Naomi Watts may not have nabbed an Oscar for her performance, but she certainly made viewers believe in her plight. We have no idea if The Ring Three will keep the franchise afloat when it is rumored to hit theaters in 2011, but we’re content just to have this horror gem in our library.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

The original is a classic, and we’ve given plenty of attention and respect to it. And before director Zack Snyder was overseeing 300 Spartans and Rorschach, he was the helmer behind this slick, chilling bullet of a remake that benefits from a bigger budget and a scarier dramatic tension applied to the zombie threat.

The remake could have proved disastrous, as most often do. But anyone who watches the film’s first 10 minutes is guaranteed to forget all of their objections and join the talented helmer for a raucous thrill ride with some much-earned character development along the way. Ving Rhames, Jake Weber and a game Sarah Polley hold together this ramshackle remake, which changes a few key elements of Romero’s story for modern audiences (the zombies can run) and retains others (the careful character study) both for horror fans current and classic.

While the subsequent slate of horror remakes failed to similarly raise pulses, Snyder’s Dawn is satisfying — and scary — enough to sustain fans through a dozen more crash-and-burn creep-fests.

Shaun of the Dead

It’s funny how fast Shaun of the Dead, the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright zombie comedy, became a cult sensation amongst fans of two seemingly opposing genres. Taking the same extraordinary wit and equal ability to comment on genre conventions as they demonstrated during their BBC TV show Spaced, the trio managed to create a side-splitting homage to zombie films. And they did so with dynamic characters, intense gore, quality scares and sizeable laughs.

Taking the structure of your average zombie film — a group of everyday people trying to find shelter from an undead horde — Pegg and Co. were able to create a film that works equally on both levels, eliciting screams as victims are horrifically disemboweled and laughter as a completely oblivious Pegg walks unknowingly through a field of flesh-eating abominations. Pepper in a few sequences of actual emotion that’ll tug at your heartstrings, and somehow Shaun of the Dead becomes more than just some cheap effort to make easy fun of a cheesy sub-genre. It becomes a legitimate love letter to filmmakers such as Romero who pioneered the big, terrible, blood-drenched world of zombies to such great effect.
