Sony has updated its Terms of Service for the PlayStation 3, taking into account its new 3D capabilities and providing some stark warnings for those who want to indulge in the experience.

“Some people may experience discomfort (such as eye strain, eye fatigue or nausea) while watching 3D video images or playing stereoscopic 3D games on 3D televisions,” read Sony Online’s amended terms, spotted by Joystiq.

“SCEA recommends that all viewers take regular breaks while watching 3D video or playing stereoscopic 3D games. The length and frequency of necessary breaks may vary from person to person. Please take breaks that are long enough to allow any feelings of discomfort to subside. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.”

There’s also a warning that children under six should perhaps steer clear of 3D on the PlayStation 3. “SCEA recommends that you consult your doctor (such as a pediatrician or eye doctor) before allowing young children to watch 3D video images or play stereoscopic 3D games. Adults should supervise young children to ensure they follow the recommendations listed above.”

We’ve managed to play both Killzone 3 and Motorstorm: Apocalypse in 3D without soiling the carpet, though we do have notoriously strong stomachs – we once ate a whole Double Down burger without painting the restaurant pink and yellow.

And as is custom, they’re hitting Japan first.

First things first: in Japan, the PS3 will cease to be made available in 120GB and 250GB sizes, and instead come in 160GB and 320GB versions. These new models will be released in Japan on July 29, and for the first time will see the PS3 Slim available in two colours: the existing black and “Classic White”.

The 160GB model will cost ¥29,980 (USD$340), while the 320GB version will retail for ¥34,980 (USD$400).

As of now, details on this expansion to the PS3 range have been confined to the Japanese market; we’ll update should we hear anything of Sony’s plans for the PAL regions or North America.

At last, the first post-E3 firmware update for the PlayStation 3, and as you might’ve suspected, this one’s got PlayStation Plus packed into the mix. We’ve talked about the service a bit so far, but to recap, $50 annual nets you a 50 percent discount on PSN titles, early access to betas, and one hour of demo time on select full titles (among other benefits). If you’re not willing to shell out the Ulysses S Grant, however, however, there’s a few other treats in the software patch, including five-star ratings for content purchased on the Store, video editor and uploader for Facebook and YouTube (note: not a video capture service, gotta use what the HDD already has), and expanded integration into Picasa and Facebook photo galleries. Speaking of Facebook, a new app will appear on the social site for showing off your PSN profile and befriending others. As usual, no exact date for the firmware is given, but if history’s any indication, it won’t be very long at all.

Early demos, beta invites, discounts on PSN stuff and patches. One year costs you $50.

You also get some content that you own ONLY when you have a subscription, meaning it goes away when you cancel, locking you into the service forever.

Those who don’t want to pay for a year, can get 3 months for $17. But the free version still lets you play online (for the most part), until Sony starts changing things around. It sounds a lot like the Xbox Live Gold vs. Silver distinction.

A Move bundle, including an EyeToy camera and Sports Champions game, will cost $99.

Move will be available bundled with a PS3 for $399. Individual, bauble-topped Move wands cost $49 and the navigation controllers go for $39. Hey, we told you it was going to be expensive. [PlayStation]

The PS3′s 3D feature—upgradeable via a software update for every PS3 out there—is actually pretty decent. Not only did we see it live, working, on a giant projection screen, but on a smaller HDTV in front of us.

First up, you still need a 3D-enabled TV to play these games, even though the PS3 supports 3D output.

Killzone 3, the biggest 3D draw for the PS3 in the next year, looked amazing. The bullets, sparks, random debris and enemies all looked different degrees of 3D. The effect was engaging, not off-putting, but also magnifies whatever nausea you experience (if you experience it) with first person shooters.

Driving games were slightly different. If you have a car in front of you, like in Motorstorm, the 3D looked great. If you didn’t, more like a first-person driving experience where there was no real frame of reference, the 3D was much less pronounced. But in Motorstorm, it again, added to the experience.

Other games like Super Stardust HD fared quite well with the glasses, but wore down your eyes faster than a standard 2D experience.

The major complaint is the fact that you have to use 3D glasses at all. It’s awkward for people glasses-wearers, and tiring to have something heavy on your face during your entire gaming session. Watching a 2-hour movie is already a monumental effort in endurance, but try going at some game for 6+ hours in 3D.

Plus, you also lose the ability for people to spectate, unless they also feel like donning those plastic glasses. Take them off, and looking at the screen is like crossing your eyes, in the fog, while drunk.

But yes, the PS3 can do 3D. It’s up to the individual developer to see how they want to implement their 3D and strike a balance between immersion and not being super annoying. Let’s hope they get it right.

A survey sent from IPSOS Online Research indicates that Sony is considering premium subscription plans for the PlayStation Network, detailing potential prices and premium services, including full hour game trials, free access to PSOne Classics, and cross-game voice chat.

Reader Brenna sent us PDF files containing the Sony survey, which begins with the following bit of text:

Sony is considering offering a premium PlayStation Network subscription in the future. The subscription offering would provide new premium features you could choose to pay for and are in addition to the features currently available for free such as access to online multiplayer gaming (current features would remain free).

Following the introduction is a series of definitions of terms such as Token Wagering – a set number of tokens given to subscribers per month that can be used to be on games and exchanged for PSN content – and Cloud Storage Space for Games, which would allow players to save their game online rather than on their hard disk, protecting their data.

Other notable services listed as potential premiums include loyalty reward programs, automatic updates, member-exclusive Facebook Connectivity, an online music service and music video service, Hulu TV catch-ups, member-only game content, discounts, demo-sharing (sharing exclusive member-only demos from your full games with friends), and Netflix without a disc.

By far the most attractive premiums are full title trials, which give the user one hour access to full PlayStation 3 games, and free access to PSOne Classics, PSP minis, and premium themes.

The list also indicates that some eagerly awaited features could be subscriber only, such as cross-game voice chat. Having waited so long for the feature, I doubt fans would be particularly happy to have to pay for it.

The chart below details four potential plans, with three costing $69.99 a year or $9.99 a month – more than an Xbox Live Gold subscription, and one running $4.99 a month and $29.99 a year.

We’ve contacted Sony for comment on the survey, but have yet to hear back as of press time. Just keep in mind that companies regularly test the waters by sending out questionnaires like these, and they by no means represent any concrete plans on Sony’s behalf.

It seems as if they simply want to gauge customer reaction to the various plans and features. Your reactions, please?

The Slim will be available everywhere by the first week of September.

Here are some more details. The 80GB PS3 (current model) will be discounted to $300, whereas the 160GB PS3 will be $400. There will be a new PS3 logo as well as modifications to the official name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 as to not be shouting all the time.

It’ll also have a BRAVIA Sync feature that’ll allow you to control the PS3′s XMB with your Sony TV remote as long as they’re connected via HDMI. And the TV will automatically turn off the PS3 when the TV goes off.

There’s also a vertical stand retailing for $24 on September 3. Whether or not you can stand it up vertically for long periods of time without the stand is unknown. Sony also says that they’re eliminating the feature of installing other operating systems on the Slim, so no more Linux.

Oh, and there will only be two USB ports.
