Drop The World

Barring any more courthouse surprises, Lil Wayne is expected to finally begin serving his one-year sentence behind bars starting today. Before he heads to New York’s Riker’s Island, however, Weezy had one more going-away present for fans: his latest video off the rap-rock disc Rebirth, “Drop the World” with guest Eminem. The video was originally scheduled to premiere on MTV on March 11th, but the Internet unofficially debuted the Chris Robinson-directed clip a week early.

With its chorus “I’mma pick the world up and I’mma drop it on your fucking head,” it makes sense that the theme of the video is pure destruction. Warriors-like mobs flood urban alleyways pulverizing everything in sight for no clear reason, with Weezy F. Baby rapping unscathed in the middle of the chaos. Eminem joins the melee two-thirds of the way in to rap side-by-side with Wayne. The video ends with the entire world aflame, adding “Drop the World” to the growing number of post-apocalyptic videos to premiere in the last half year, like Jay-Z’s “Run This Town,” the Black Eyed Peas’ “Imma Be Rocking that Body” and Adam Lambert’s “Time for Miracles.”

Even though Weezy will be spending the next year in prison, this will hardly be the last video we see featuring the multiplatinum star in the next 365 days. As Rolling Stone reported in our “Lil Wayne Goes to Jail” cover story, Wayne has filmed anywhere between 10 to 20 videos in front of a green screen in anticipation of his time away — including one for his guest spot on Drake’s Thank Me Later — ensuring we’ll have plenty of Tha Carter during his prison stint. We’re willing to bet the “Listen to Lil Wayne” shirt Weezy wears in the clip also becomes a popular fashion statement while the rapper is serving his sentence.

Last night the Golden Globes allowed for plenty of updates about the new Spider-Man reboot. Rumored director Marc Webb shared what he’d like to see from Spidey, and we found out yet another reason why Spidey was killed.

New York Magazine’s Vulture blog has the inside scoop on the massive chaos happening behind the scenes on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, and why it was eventually canned by Sony. We know that Raimi’s overall hatred for the current script delayed the filming process — he wanted John Malkovich to play The Vulture, but nobody else wanted the Vulture as the main villain.

Turns out it wasn’t just script problems that killed Spidey 4, it was Avatar. After the film came out

Raimi wanted all sorts of envelope-pushing CGI (though not 3-D, which the studio was considering). Such effects would take more money and, just as crucially, more time. But the studio, whose corporate parent Sony must answer to Wall Street, had set a strict May 6, 2011 release date, and missing that date would mean depriving Sony of a billion dollars in revenue. “Every movie is a power struggle,” explains one producer on the Sony lot familiar with the fracas. “But the tipping point was that Sam wanted to do certain things that would push the envelope in terms of [special effects] ‘toys’ and other visual stimulation, and Sony didn’t feel that was essential to the franchise.”

And to top it all off, Raimi wanted to end the movie exactly the same as Spider-Man 2. With Tobey quitting his Spider-Man job Yet Again. He breaks up with Mary Jane and falls in love with a new woman — who turns out to be the Vulture’s daughter. After Spidey kills the Vulture, she dumps him, and he’s so depressed, he quits being Spidey again. I think we can all let out a collective sigh that this film didn’t go through.

In other news indie-director darling Marc Webb dropped a little hint to MTV about where he would take the Spider-Man series, if given the chance to direct. The potential Spidey director side stepped questions about whether he’s actually doing the film, but responded like so when asked if he was a fan:

“Of course,” Webb told MTV News when asked if he was a fan of Spider-Man. “Stan Lee, big fan … love the ‘Ultimate [Spider-Man]‘ stuff.”

We’ll have to wait and see, but we’d really love to see what Webb could do with the Ultimate Spider-Man version. Could be lots better than Spidey dating the Vulture’s daughter

New Jay Z Vid

We can’t even pretend to understand it, but we love the video for Jay-Z’s hypnotic new single for “On to the Next One” featuring Swizz Beatz.

Shot in black and white—his preferred color scheme these days—the video is little more than seemingly unrelated images morphed together into a collage. There are visuals that are take-offs (or at least we think they are) of Heath Ledger’s Joker and Marilyn Manson. There’s something about it that’s oddly compelling, even the shots of milk.

Toward the end, Jay Z sings “y’all should be afraid of what I’m gonna do next. “ Guess what, Hova? You’re wrong. We can’t wait. “The Blueprint 3” and its singles have shown a reinvigorated Jay-Z who just grows stronger and stronger.

And in case you’re wondering, that insinuating sample you hear running throughout the whole song is Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E

Check it out, people; the official video for the Jay-Z/Alicia Keys collaboration “Empire State of Mind,” which the pair performed at the World Series on Thursday, has been released.

The Hype Williams-directed clip, like the song itself, serves as a tribute to the Big Apple, and was filmed in Harlem, Times Square, and at Ground Zero on October 1.
